Fighting coronavirus aerosols with UVC blue light

The Blue Evolution series of steam cleaning systems from Beam, suitable for the food industry, also purify the room air. UVC blue light irradiation in the water filter reliably kills viruses and bacteria.

Akey point in favour of the high-end cleaning equipment in the Blue Evolution series from Beam in Altenstadt: in the discussion about keeping the coronavirus in check, scientists and hygiene experts not only advise sanitizing surfaces but also purifying the room air. This is exactly what the equipment offered by the family business does. The company manufactures steam cleaners with the additional integrated elimination of pathogens using UVC blue light irradiation in the water filter.

We have known for a long time that coronaviruses spread through what are known as aerosols in room air, causing new infections. To minimize the concentration of viruses in enclosed spaces, experts advise using high-performance filters or UV emitters to deactivate viruses and kill bacteria.

The HACCP-certified steam cleaners in the Blue Evolution series, approved for use in the food industry, work with dry steam and deactivate Sars-CoV2 viruses directly on the surface being cleaned. At the same time, the room air is washed every time the steam cleaner is operated, since suctioned pathogens land in the vacuum system’s water filter, where they are irradiated with UVC blue light.

“Attention to the aerosol debate has sparked interest in our exclusive technology, which has a dual effect against the coronavirus,” says Robert Wiedemann, one of Beam’s two Managing Directors. The family business specializes in sustainable steam cleaning systems that work entirely without chemicals, using dry steam for highly effective cleaning.

Marco Wiedemann, also Managing Director, emphasizes: “Outstanding hygiene has always been our passion. Eliminating pathogens in the soiled water tank through irradiation with UVC blue light is a permanent part of our cleaning concept. Of course, it’s great that this unique selling proposition is now gaining so much media attention. Just about every expert is currently emphasizing the importance of keeping the spread of the coronavirus through aerosols in check using measures such as UVC irradiation. Reducing the concentration of viruses in enclosed spaces is, in fact, currently one of the biggest challenges faced by anyone responsible for hygiene and health protection”.

The problem: in order for UVC rays to work, the distance between the radiation source and surface should be 10 to 30 cm. Room air disinfection is only possible when the air is moving so that pathogens continuously pass by the radiation source, hospital hygienist Michael Pietsch from Mainz University/Germany said in an expert interview. “Our Blue Evolution equipment meets exactly these requirements with the continuous suctioning of room air,” Marco Wiedemann confirms. “The suctioned air goes to the water filter where it is continuously irradiated as it cycles past the UVC lamp. This effectively eliminates pathogens”.
