Dear readers,

By Dr. Bernhard Reichenbach, Chefredakteur

At ProSweets Cologne 2020 trade fair, which we report on in this issue, more than 18,000 visitors gathered information from 260 exhibitors. That is around 60 fewer exhibitors and 2,000 fewer visitors than at the previous event last year, yet about 50 exhibitors and 1,000 guests more than at the comparable event in 2017, when the packaging fair interpack also took place. This is a success for Koelnmesse as the organizer. Since various large exhibitors from the process and packaging sector stay away in the interpack year, Koelnmesse intends to promote the smaller exhibitors from this sector and to strengthen the ingredients area.

For a problem of a different kind, we present interesting solutions in the special section of this issue: compliance with the high hygiene standards in the manufacture of confectionery, baked goods and snacks. Costly recall campaigns and associated damage to the image due to contaminated, health-endangering goods can be avoided.

The trade in nut kernels, dried fruit and baked seeds is a topic in the Ingre-dients section: In our “sp portrait” we present the Hamburg-based family company Keyaniyan, which thanks to long-standing personal contacts with suppliers, can offer its customers in the confectionery industry, bakery wholesale and other food segments high quality raw materials.

In the Packaging section, we take a look behind the scenes of the Confiserie Bosch in Uhingen/Germany. The company benefits greatly from a new multihead weigher from Ishida, with which fragile confectionery products are weighed and filled fully automatically.
