Share of sustainably-produced cocoa in Germany climbs to 45 percent

The share of sustainably-produced cocoa in German-made confectionery increased to 45 % last year. This was reported by the BDSI Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) based on a survey of member companies. This represents an increase of 5.7 percentage points over 2015; the first BDSI survey from 2011 shows that this share was only approx. 3 %.

In 2012 BDSI had recommended that its members significantly increase the share of sustainably-produced cocoa in confectionery sold in Germany over the coming years, in order to reach a 50 % share for the whole sector by the year 2020. By 2025, the very ambitious target is to reach a 70 % share. The professionalisation of cocoa cultivation and the associated improvement of living conditions for millions of cocoa farmers and their children, especially in West Africa, are the focus.
